Granted, this is only 1% of its usual $300 billion revenue, this begs the question: how does Walmart track shoplifting and theft in their stores? The answer might surprise you.
How Does Walmart Track Shoplifting In 2022?
Loss Prevention Associates surveillance cameras and security scanners are all used to catch shoplifters at Walmart. This is as far back as 2022. Walmart has also installed AI-enabled cameras at selfcheckouts that can detect whether an item was not properly scanned before being put in the bag.
Shoplifting is a major cause of Walmart’s financial loss each year. This has increased since the implementation of self-checkout.
Walmart currently uses Everseen image recognition technology, which is from Ireland to lessen theft during self-checkouts.
To detect shoplifting, these cameras will be placed at the cashier in all over 1,000 stores.
The cameras are able to track individual items, and they can identify when the bag has been used without having to scan it first. If the program has been flagged, it will alert a member of staff to the attempted theft.
Walmart employs intercom codes Code 300, Department 51 and many more to warn customers about shoplifting.
What happens if you are caught shoplifting at Walmart?
Walmart is quick to press charges on anyone found shoplifting. Also, they are less likely not to drop petty-theft charges than other stores. You may end up with a criminal background that could make it hard to find work in the future.
It all depends on what the theft is worth. You can face up to a whole year imprisonment if you are caught stealing Walmart merchandise from under 16.
Walmart doesn’t have to show you the footage of shoplifting.
Walmart may press charges and hand over the tape to the police. But they don’t have to give it to the shoplifter. If you want to see the tape, you probably need to get a defense lawyer.

Walmart Calls the Cops on Shoplifting
Yes, Walmart does call the cops for shoplifting. If the barcode alarms are activated and security cameras show you shoplifting in action, police will be called and you most likely will be arrested.
If you believe that shoplifting is being wrongly charged, be calm and immediately contact police.
If you are not satisfied with the answer, then ask the police. If nothing comes of that, then you may need to find an attorney. In any case, don’t sign anything if your innocence is doubtful.
Walmart has the legal right to contact the police in the event that they find anyone dumpster diving, or trying to grab pallets at the loading dock.
How do you react when your first Walmart shoplifting arrest results in you being caught?
Under 16-years old will have to return items. You may be sent home by your parents, the police or both.
If you are over 16 and caught shoplifting from Walmart for the first time, it is highly unlikely that you will go to jail. However, you could be still charged with misdemeanors, which will remain permanent on your record.
You’ll also be barred from future Walmart Stores. If you get caught shoplifting again in another Walmart store, then you could be looking at jail time, a fine, or probation.
Being caught twice is often more costly than being caught once. A third offense will result in you facing a felony charge, rather than just a misdemeanor.
