Ottawa Art Gallery

After years of lobbying by local artists for a municipal gallery that would represent the energy of the Ottawa art scene, the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) was finally founded in 1988 as the Gallery at Arts Court. The Ottawa Art Gallery is now an independent charity and has grown to be one of the best contemporary art spaces in the city. The gallery has a full programme and exhibition calendar, including community, education, and community programs, as well as an annual auction and summer camp. In 2012 the gallery won the Ontario Association of Art Galleries Public Program Award. It was awarded for In Real Life, a love-letter party organized by Johanna Mizgala for their 2012 summer exhibit.

Pierre Richardson: What Is Big and Small at the Same Time?

The work displayed in this space is a large-scale evolutionary improvisational installation that explores narrative, trauma and mental health. An overwhelming mix of media makes it possible for viewers to find connections among various types of jokes, humors, photographs, paintings, doodles, videos, and other media. Richardson's artwork attempts to recreate the experience of everyday life, which is filled with strife and struggle. Although the arrangement of Richardson's paintings may be considered architectural, they seem to have an architecture that could crumble at any time. These themes of desperation, war and darkness aren't presented as negative, they serve to help us achieve growth.

-Artist statement excerpt An Ottawa-based multidisciplinary artist, Pierre Richardson (link is external) holds a BFA (2016) and is currently pursuing an MFA (2018) from the University of Ottawa. He is a person with mental illness and explores dark corners of the mind. To communicate with his subconscious as well as with readers of his works, he seeks narrative where none exists.
