We all, for the most part, have at least one bottle of shampoo sitting in our showers, but have you checked its ingredient label recently? Although shampoos that contain silicones or other additives can be good for hair, products that have a more detailed ingredient list (such as the most sulfate free shampoos) are growing in popularity.

Over the years, there’s been a lot of chatter about sulfates in shampoos and their supposedly harsh effects. They aren’t as dangerous as some people believe.

We’re sure you want to know how sulfates got so much attention before we tackle that issue. According to New York City-based board-certified dermatologist, Neil Sadick , M.D., concerns about the ingredient started during the ’70s, “when some shampoos contained ethanolamine lauryl sulfates that released carcinogenic nitrosamines,” he says. Manufacturers took immediate corrective measures, but sulfates are still associated with health risk. Research shows that sulfates, contrary to what we thought, are not as harmful as we think. An analysis from 2015 found that cleaning products containing this ingredient are safe, both in toxicological and sustainable perspectives. What about hair sulfates? Good news and bad news, it turns out. In 2016, a study revealed that surfactants are the chemicals in shampoos that cause your hair to become so sudsy, like sulfates. They can be used for removing sebum and dirt. The study notes, however, that surfactants can cause hair frizziness, and that it is not a mutually exclusive relationship.

A common myth if your hair has ever been colored is that shampoos without sulfates are more beneficial because they won’t remove the color. According to Randy Schueller, a cosmetic chemist, water is the real culprit. It is just as harmful as any cleanser.

16 Sulfate-Free Shampoos That Won’T Strip Your Hair

Byrdie/Chloe Jeong By now it is common to see shampoos and hand soaps labeled with “sulfatefree”. This word, much like the terms nontoxic, natural, or organic, carries lots of weight, expectations and could even drive sales higher. So, what are sulfates, and are they inherently bad for your skin and hair?

Sulfates is the foaming agent found in many traditional shampoos. Do you remember those shampoos where you put a large amount of the foaming agent in your palm and then massage your hair with it? Those are sulfates at work. “They’re cleansing agents and create lather to help to strip oil and dirt, but may also strip moisture and color out of the hair,” explains Roz Murray , a stylist at Bumble and bumble in New York City. “They may also cause irritation on sensitive scalps and create negative charges which can result in excessive frizz,” she says.

Sulfate-free shampoos are the best. These shampoos are thought to preserve hair’s color, texture, and moisture better than those with foaming agents. Although they might not lather up like you’re used to, know that your hair is still getting clean while looking healthier at the same time.

These Are the Most Effective Sulfate Free Shampoos As Per Hairstylists

The negative reputation of sulfates is fairly well known by now, with reports noting that some can irritate your skin and eyes. However, many shampoos contain salts of the sulfuric acid-based salts such as sodium laurylsulfate. That’s because, despite what has been said about how they can harm our bodies, sulfates are highly effective at cleaning your hair and scalp and they give shampoo that lather that’s synonymous with a thorough cleanse. Brooke Jordan who is co-owner and master stylist at Bird House Salon in Gowanus says that sulfates can clean but aren’t worth the potential adverse side effects. She explains that sulfates belong to the surfactant group and are therefore not safe. Fiona Guidice of Fiona Hair NYC says that sulfates can damage hair and cause dry ends. Shirley Hagel, Spoke and Weal’s color specialist, says it bluntly. “Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (which is the most severe of all sulfates) is the same ingredient in Dawn dish detergent. So, if Dawn isn’t your preferred shampoo, you might want to look for one that doesn’t contain any sulfates or other types. There are tons sulfatefree shampoos out there, from low-cost brands that you can get at your local drugstores to expensive salon-grade ones. You can find sulfate free shampoos for any hair type. We spoke with 15 salon owners and hairstylists to find the most effective sulfate free shampoos. Then we searched our archive for other articles we have written. There are shampoos that work for certain hair types and others that can be used all over the body. We also have some that won’t leave behind harmful chemicals.

Verb Ghost Shampoo Stephanie Louis from Brooklyn’s Stylebox Salon emphatically endorses Verb Ghost as an all-purpose, sulfateless shampoo that is “suitable for everybody.” Her favorite shampoo? Verb Ghost Shampoo Stephanie Louis of Brooklyn’s Stylebox Salon says it’s “probably the best shampoo ever.” (Emphasis hers.) She’s not the only one who loves it Verb Ghost is among the best-rated shampoos at Sephora, according to some 900 hyperenthusiastic reviewers , one of whom wrote that “it feels almost magical when it lathers.” This is a not-insignificant detail because, as we noted above, sulfates are often what makes shampoos foam up, so it can be harder to find a sulfate-free one with lathering properties, let alone “almost magical” ones. Verb Ghost was also highly praised by Sephora’s reviewers, with their praise of the product (and the reasonable price) that helped them to reach the top. Louis claims that it is “really amazing and top-shelf stuff.”

15 Top Sulfate Free Shampoos that Leave Hair Soft and Clean in All the Right Ways

It is possible to reconsider the lather, rinse and shampoo.

What would you use to wash your hair? If so, then you should be aware of sulfates. The detergent that makes your shampoo foam is an aggressive foaming agent, also known as detergent. This can cause hair and environment damage. Our experts shared the secrets of why shampoo should contain no sulfates.

One, sulfates from petroleum are “associated with climate change and pollution and greenhouse gases,” while those derived from coconut or palm oils “are a concern due to the destruction of rainforests and tree plantations,” Ryan Richman, Kerastase consultant hairstylist. Richman further notes that “sulfates being poured down the drain by millions” could negatively impact aquatic animals and pollute our environment. Dhiran Mitry is a New York City hairstylist and hairstylist at David Mallett. Richman and Mistry note also that sulfates may cause frizz which can lead to more hairy scenarios in the future. Did you know that washing hair can cause such damage?

This ingredient can also cause skin irritation and damage to hair. Richman states that this is particularly true for people with contact dermatitis and rosacea. “When shampooing your hair, the shampoo runs down your skin and can cause itching,” says Mistry.

So, it’s pretty safe to say that washing up with sulfates isn’t doing you any favors! Consider the pros instead and consider switching to a safe, sulfateless shampoo.

Do you think a sulfate free shampoo is right for you? Here are 5 Questions to Find out.

Sulfate-free shampoo for dry and damaged hair.

What exactly is the sulfate? In short, sulfates work well to remove dirt and oil from the skin. Because they can attract both oil and water to their surface, sulfates find their way into many hair and skin care products. Due to this quality, they can efficiently lift dirt and oil from the body and rinse down the drain when mixed with water. They also produce the lovely foam that you feel so clean and fresh.

Although sulfates can be safe, effective and efficient, some people may not understand the difference between sulfate-free products. One thing seems to be the problem: Shampoos containing sulfur can sometimes do a better job of their jobs. Although these shampoos remove dirt and grime from hair, it may wash out important scalp stuff, leading to moisture loss. Sulfate prevention products, which are milder and less drying, tend to have a lower frothiness than their counterparts. So, is it right for you? To help you determine if your hair could benefit from sulfate-free shampoo , ask yourself these five questions:

1. Does your hair look curly or frizzy?

Answering yes to the question is likely that sulfatefree is your best option.

The curly-picture may become worse if you add sulfate shampoo. It lifts the hair cuticle which can make it more likely for frizz. A shampoo that doesn’t contain sulfate will work best in this situation, as it won’t dry out hair as badly as regular shampoos.

Redken Curvaceous features three cleansing products with no sulfate for all types of curls.

5. Is it possible to get away with not washing your hair every day?

@ryanpearl23 Yes, you can opt for a shampoo that is sulfate free.

Your hair may not need as much oil so you might be able skip your daily shampoo. A cleansing conditioner may be a good idea to go with your sulfate free shampoo to give it the additional conditioning that you might need.

A dry shampoo can be used to absorb grease from the roots to combat oiliness caused by shampooing. Redken Dry Shampoo Powder 02 has charcoal that absorbs grease. It also provides volume and texture for hair.

Redken Pillowproof Dry Two Day Extension Dry Shampoo mattifies oily hair and makes it easier to style.

If you answered “no” to many of these questions and a regular sulfate-containing shampoo is best for, pick your shampoo and conditioner based on your biggest hair concern.

You may be having a problem with oil if your roots become greasy quickly and you are unable to get your mind around skipping your shampoo. Oily hair may be able to use no-sulfate shampoos, but you might prefer a product that contains sulfate.

Sulfate Free Shampoos are Really Better

There is no scientific evidence that the “sulfate-free” component makes shampoo gentler than other shampoos that contain sulfates. December 3, 2018

Why are Sulfate-Free Shampoos Bad?

Sulfates are known to reduce sebum production and dryness. Sulfates can cause skin irritation, especially for those with dry skin. Their skin is already lacking sebum and sulfates remove even that little sebum also. So, their scalp can have serious damage using sulfate-containing shampoos.
