Our Test Results

It is important to carefully consider the following features when looking for a replacement iron. Each model we tried has an automatic shutoff. This means that if the iron is left unplugged or you are interrupted, it will stop working after 10 minutes. The item can also be turned off if the iron is lying down or tipping on its side.

Every iron, except one, comes with an anti-calcification and self-cleaning system. This removes mineral scale buildup in iron’s vapourizing chamber. This is a great way to prolong the life of your iron and make it work more efficiently by cleaning out any steam vents. Most irons that were tested had a stainless steel soleplate. The iron glides on your clothes, providing even heat.

Steam output which is necessary for getting rid of deep wrinkles and creases is extremely important in a clothing iron. For smoother clothes, a model should have a steam boost button. Luckily, every model we tested had one. The steam controls on all models we tested allow you to choose whether the iron is to dry silk or synthetic fabric, high for thicker fabrics such as cotton or linen, and medium/high to dry.

Every iron we tested featured temperature control dials to adjust the heat for different types of material. Many also can be used as vertical steamers, but we did not test that feature. Water tanks, of course, are necessary for the iron to create steam, but the maximum volume each iron can accommodate ranges from 4 to 14 ounces. If you let your ironing pile up, a larger tank means less need for refilling. Irons also tend to weigh more. However, we found that these extra ounces didn’t make any significant difference in either comfort or functionality.

After considering all these factors and looking for highly-rated, critically acclaimed, clothing iron alternatives, we narrowed the field down to nine irons which were receiving excellent reviews.

All irons were put to the test. We gave them scores for their ability and speed in handling various types of wrinkled and balled up clothing such as a silk scarf, linen shirt, jeans and pair of jeans. We also looked at a variety of features, from water tank size to cord length to the number of settings each iron includes. Below is an overview of how each iron was evaluated.

Steam irons are great for keeping clothes neat and clean.

In November 2021, this guide was updated to include Conair’s new Cleaning Award-winning iron. Based on testing results by Carolyn Forte, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, the update included Conair’s latest Iron. Also, we added detailed buying instructions and removed discontinued and sold-out products. We updated prices and availability all throughout.

When you want that pressed-from-the-dry-cleaner look, you need a powerful steam iron to get your dresses shirts and pants crisp and wrinkle-free. While garment steamers may be able to do the trick, the iron heat and the weight of the steam iron, plus the support offered by an ironing board, will ensure you achieve the silky smooth results that you want.

Ironing is now much easier than it used to be. Some models are faster to heat and can be controlled electronically to keep the right temperature. These models steam easily with their large water tanks that are transparent and easily removable and the retractable cords.

The Things You Need to Look for When Buying an Iron

Ensure the unit is the right size for you. To iron safely, choose one you can hold comfortably. It’s important to compare the clothing iron or steamer weights with yours before you buy it. Look for soleplates that aren’t too large if your goal is to cover more space in one go. More holes in the soleplate don’t necessarily mean more steam. How often do you iron in one day? It may prove useful to have a larger water tank especially if the tank has a transparent cover.

You should look for these features. While steam output can be difficult to quantify, irons that perform best are typically between 1700-1800 watts. Removable water tanks are great for refilling the iron often. Irons nowadays automatically turn off when they are tipped over or knocked down. We prefer irons that can shut off rapidly when the tip is in any direction and not only on the soleplate. A retractable cord, according to Lab experts, is a good storage option. Bright digital controls make it easy to see.

Your material preference and your ironing needs will determine the type of fabric you choose. Make sure you have a steam blast and spray option if your iron irons a lot. You can also check out vertical steam technology to make drapes smoother and to improve the appearance of bed skirts. It is more difficult to get crisp, well-pressed dress shirt and crease-free creases with steamers. Steam ironing stations can be useful for quilters or people who use steam to iron large quantities of clothes.

How We Tested For The Best Irons

Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab measures irons. For safety, we collect 14 data points, including the rate and amount of steam, temperatures of the soleplate at different settings and temperature swings at each setting. The irons are weighed and measured for how much heat they take. We evaluate how simple the sprays and controls are, what the water tank capacity is, and whether the iron can tip over if it is placed on a wobblyboard. Next, we roll cotton, linens, wool, nylon and any other synthetic fabrics. The creases are allowed to dry overnight. Each swatch of fabric is then ironed at the correct setting. We rate the smoothness of each one using standard guidelines that are part the Textiles Industry Testing Methods.

We spent at least 10 hours testing each iron in our steam iron test. To test the 15 irons, we also tested 90 fabric samples. Coupled with nearly 400 performance and ease of use evaluations, w e spent more than 150 hours testing over a hot board to evaluate 15 irons. These are the best ones you can buy:

German-Engineered Iron: The best

Rowenta Focus Micro Steam Iron Nearly 4,000 customers give the Rowenta Focus Micro Steam Iron five stars, and dozens praise the German quality. The quality of this iron was evident as soon as it arrived in the package. It was SO much more luxurious than my Sunbeam. Then I saw ‘Made in Germany’ stamped on the side and it all made sense,” one reviewer writes. Although it is a bit expensive for an iron, many people are happy with the purchase. “This is, without a doubt, the Mercedes-Maybach of irons,” one customer writes. A customer wrote, “If you are only going to buy an iron every 20+years, it is worth spending the most money.” Other reviewers love the longer power cord and “blast of steam”, which comes from the bottom. “I can iron a linen shirt that has been balled up in the back of my closet in about 3 minutes with this iron. This iron works great,” one customer wrote. Many people also mentioned the fact that the water “decalcifies automatically” so regular tap water can be used in the tank. According to one reviewer, this can be disastrous for irons. You don’t have to worry about that with this guy.”

This innovative steam iron is 25% more efficient in terms of energy consumption

Amazon Rowenta DW6080 Eco-Intelligence Rowenta’s Eco-Intelligence is an iron with a strong reputation for its outstanding performance. Eco-Intelligence is similar to its brother, but has 400 holes built into its stainless-steel soleplate. This allows it to produce powerful steam plumes. Like other high-quality contenders, the Eco-Intelligence can also be held vertically to make steam.

This iron is 25% more efficient than regular irons due to its unique design. It directs steam exactly where it is needed, which makes it 25% less energy-intensive. There are three settings to adjust energy consumption (dry, eco and boost for stubborn creases), as well as an auto shutoff function after 8 minutes when left up, or after 30 seconds if it is tipped over. This increases safety and helps with energy saving.

What the Reviews Say: Overall, reviewers say the Eco-Intelligence lives up to the Rowenta name. This iron has been my own for around three months, and I can honestly say that it is one of the best. The steam boost is not necessary for me as I have many shirts that were difficult to wrinkle. You can adjust the power to ECO.

1. Tefal Ultimate Pure Steam Iron

Amazon. It’s far more powerful and effective than the other irons I tried. It also boasts a MicroScale filter designed to stop scale from building up and ensure pure, filtered steam only – which means very little chance of ending up with limescale stains and nasty marks on your Sunday best. It traps any small scale particles in the steam chamber. To prevent water staining and wet spots, t is anti-drip.

There is a lot of talk about the Durilium Airglide Autoclean sole plate. In fairness, it allows for quick, smooth glides and even steam distribution. It is easy to heat up the continuous steam and it immediately clouds with the desired, crease-busting smoke.

Tefal Ultimate Purity works great on drapes and other hanging clothing. It has a clearly labelled temperature dial, with thermostat settings labelled especially for linen, cotton, wool, silk and synthetics, and dry ironing without steam. This turbo burst button, along with the extra steam buttons work well for linen and cotton. Water tank capacities are 350ml and 3m respectively. This is plenty of water for daily use.

It can be used for both horizontal and vertical steaming, just like many other irons. The auto-off feature also protects you from the potential disaster that could result from leaving it unattended.

I’m impressed by the lengthy 10-year guarantee on the Tefal Ultimate Pure, and as far as irons go, it’s not unattractive. I felt confident using it with my favorite shirts because of the superior filter. Tick.
