However, we found that these extra ounces didn’t make any significant difference in either comfort or functionality.

How We Tested For The Best Irons
Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab measures irons. For safety, we collect 14 data points, including the rate and amount of steam, temperatures of the soleplate at different settings and temperature swings at each setting. The irons are weighed and measured for how much heat they take. We evaluate how simple the sprays and controls are, what the water tank capacity is, and whether the iron can tip over if it is placed on a wobblyboard. Next, we roll cotton, linens, wool, nylon and any other synthetic fabrics. The creases are allowed to dry overnight. Each swatch of fabric is then ironed at the correct setting. We rate the smoothness of each one using standard guidelines that are part the Textiles Industry Testing Methods.
We spent at least 10 hours testing each iron in our steam iron test. To test the 15 irons, we also tested 90 fabric samples.
