Our Trustworthy Advice

We primarily base our advice on two huge fact-finding programs that we carried out to obtain feedback from those who use refrigerators. Then, we quantify and analyze the feedback. Although we didn’t test refrigerators, we believe that extensive research helped us to identify key trends we wouldn’t have discovered if we had only tested them.

Our first major research project was a survey of Wirecutter readers, with more than 5,000 completed responses. This survey gave us solid data on overall satisfaction by brand and door style, an idea of the refrigerator features that make the most people the happiest, and some info about refrigerator reliability.

This was not a representative survey. And we collected statistically significant data on only seven or so brands (out of dozens). However, the results from the survey reveal some important truths about category sales and trends. Wirecutter user researcher Raquel Hayas was instrumental in completing the survey. She also crunched the numbers into meaningful figures. The other major source of information was an analysis of 28,000 customer reviews on Home Depot’s site, across 34 different refrigerator models from all the major brands and spanning door types and prices, conducted with the aid of an artificial-intelligence-driven tool called FindOurView . This analysis was limited to a very small number of fridges available. However, it revealed a wealth of details about features owners value and gave insight into the strengths and weaknesses of specific models. It also helped us identify LG fridges with cooling issues that were particularly problematic. A number of refrigerator reviews were also available, including information about reliability and tips on choosing and installing fridges. For previous versions of this guide, we also spoke to several industry experts, including brand representatives, dealers, and repair technicians.

It’s important to be clear that we haven’t conducted any refrigerator testing ourselves. That’s largely because of logistics and pandemic protocols, and because there’s simply not a ton to glean objectively from hands-on use. We have, however, touched most of the fridges we mention in this guide at appliance showrooms we’ve yanked the handles and wiggled the shelves and so on.

This guide doesn’t have all the answers. We haven’t yet done as much research as we would like into topics such as built-in fridges, newer brands and those that sell small or moderate volumes of fridges, dual-evaporator cooling systems, mini fridges, all-fridge (no-freezer) models and other less-common refrigerator types, smart fridges, and best practices for maintenance. These topics will be explored in depth by us in the coming months. In the interim, the research that we did can aid many in their search for a quality fridge.

What We Do Not Have for Refrigerator Picks

We don’t have “official” recommendations for specific refrigerator models. As a Wirecutter guide we would only highlight the refrigerators that make us the most happy. Earlier versions of this guide took that approach, but it never felt like the optimal way to tackle the topic, so we’re trying something different these days.

The guide still points you towards brands and models that stand out from our research. Additionally, the links will link to actual examples. Wirecutter is allowed to earn commission if readers purchase products through these links. But for now we aren’t calling anything a “pick” or “the best.” This approach feels appropriate for a few reasons. One, fridges come in so many sizes that it would be difficult to compile a comprehensive list on one page. The older version of this guide attempted to solve that issue by listing only the most commonly used sizes and types. We heard back from those who were unable or unwilling to use them and feeling left out. Also, it’s a subjective category. Reasonable people can draw different conclusions about various features, such as door ice or freezer bin. Counter-depth is better than standard-depth. French-door is not the same thing. A useful performance metric is not one that distinguishes good refrigerators from those with poor ones. And there are not enough reliable data regarding longevity or reliability to be able to make accurate predictions.

The Tests

Just by living in the real world, you’ve probably noticed that appliances operate best in certain temperature conditions. A number of mechanical and electronic parts work in perfect harmony together to make an appliance function well. This can cause problems in certain areas, such as in extreme hot or cold weather.

Particularly refrigerators can be sensitive to the ambient air. Refrigerators pull in air and cool it down to temperatures cold enough (usually around 37degF) to preserve food and inhibit bacteria growth. In hot weather, the condenser and cooling coils have to work harder to cool the warmer air. The fridge is less efficient in cold conditions. This is why, if you happen to have a second fridge in your sweltering hot or freezing cold garage, you may have noticed that the air inside that fridge is not as cold as the air inside your kitchen fridge.

These temperature effects are mitigated by testing each refrigerator in a lab where the air is heated to 72°F +/-5°F. Each fridge is able to function at its peak and not be penalized for using colder or warmer air than it had to.

The refrigerators were tested for their reliability over the course, not including calibration. Once the fridge is filled with water ballast (since fridges perform better when there’s more space), we then measure its temperature, humidity loss and freezing time.

* Temperature 37°F is the ideal setting for fridges and freezers, while 0°F is the optimal. Temperatures above 37°F can cause bacteria growth. A temperature of 40°F would be considered the danger zone for bacteria. If the temperature of your freezer is higher than 0degF, it means that food may be not being frozen properly. When each fridge is set to that temperature, temperatures are recorded throughout the week. These data show us both how close they were to 37degF (or 0degF), and also how close the ambient temperature was to the ideal temperature.
