Types of thermometers We tested five different types of thermometers: rectal, oral, axillary (armpit), temporal (forehead) and tympanic (remote ear). There may be a preference between one and another. However, we spoke with a physician to help determine which thermometer is the most appropriate for what situation.
Dr. Elkort emphasized the importance of using the proper thermometer for different ages especially when taking the temperature of a child. For children younger than three years, rectal thermometers work best as they record an internal temperature. Toys for babies and toddlers may have small ear canals, so it is hard to read the temperature orally. A rectal thermometer has less margin for error. Rectal thermometers are critical for accurate readings.
He recommends that children older than 3 years of age use the following for accuracy: oral (armpit), forehead, forehead, and ear. Dr. Elkort says that he doesn’t recommend forehead or ears thermometers for children. These can be inaccurate and give you an incorrect reading if you do have fever. This allows forehead and ear temperature thermometers to be quickly used for checking for fever. Dr. Elkort suggests these thermometers be used when measuring temperature in large numbers of people. These thermometers also work well with cross-contamination because they work quickly. As a precautionary measure you can simply take your temperature. The actual temperature reading doesn’t matter as much.
How to identify a fever. A normal body temp is at 98.6°F. There are many variables that can affect this number. Before you take your temperature when feeling ill, you should determine your normal body temperature with that same thermometer since many thermometer readings have a slight margin so you compare the reading against a predetermined baseline for normal.
