Car Wax Tested

The Drive team up with Ryan Prantil professional detailer to help us choose the most effective car waxes. The ease with which each wax could be applied or removed was a key consideration. After evaluating the application, we looked at how durable, water-shedding protection and how shiny it was.

Here’s another look at our testing product line-up from traditional carnauba paste spray-on and liquid synthetics.

Each of our

How We Tested Car Waxes

“>best car waxes takes a different approach to protection and shine. But whether synthetic polymer, all-natural paste, or hybrid ceramic, all delivered a quality finish. Meguiar Ultimate Liquid Wax was the winner across all categories, while others got higher scores in each category.

Easy use is equally important. Waxes that require a lot of work to clean up and apply are discouraged from being used often. The hybrid ceramics were more difficult to use and easier than synthetic or carnauba waxes. When using hybrid ceramics you should pay particular attention to the drying time and how to apply them.

We couldn’t test every car wax on the market, but we have used a few over the years. Benefits of car wax

Protection against scratches. The proper application of car wax helps to keep paint scratches from happening by small pieces of dust, dirt, and even sand. These scratch-causing enemies are repelled by wax, which acts like a shield and helps your paint remain pristine.

It makes your car more easy to wash. Regular waxing adds a protective layer that helps stop tree sap, smashed bugs, bird feces, and other road grime from sticking to your paint. Wax repels standing water that leaves hard to clean spots behind.

Shields from damage. Pebbles as small as a grain can damage your paintwork. Wax itself won’t stop projectiles, but its sealing properties help keep your paint in top condition and fight against damage out on the road.

Maintains that new-car shine. It will protect your paint and preserve it. Without protection, car paint may become dull and lose its shine. Neglect can lead to dull or oxidized colors.

Diminishes the appearance of scratches. Although it won’t mask or repair deep scratches, regular waxing may reduce the appearance of shallow scratches.

Increases the resale value. Car waxing can be considered regular maintenance. This is similar to changing your oil and rotating your tires. When the time comes to trade-in your well-maintained vehicle or resell it, you can make a good investment in car care.

Water repellent. Wax repels water and is the most popular and abundant solvent. Rainwater that is acidic or alkali can cause even greater damage.

These are Five Tips to Get You Started with Waxing

Check the labels. Some waxes need to be allowed to dry before they can haze. Other waxes do not. Follow the directions to get the best result. You will be a blessing to your car’s paintjob.

Be sure to apply it correctly. These products are not compatible with direct sunlight.

A no-no to circles. It might seem natural to apply wax with a circular motion. However, it’s not the best technique for waxing cars. Instead of applying the wax to a clear coating in one motion, apply the wax back-and forth. This holds true regardless of whether the machine is used or if you are using a hand applicator and microfiber cloth.

A clay bar kit is a good option: Many modern cars have a clear coating. While it may not be your preference to use cleaner wax, a clay-bar or clay mitt kit can remove paint contaminants prior to waxing. The results will speak volumes.

Wax will not fix every scratch. While a wax coat will fill light scratches and protect your paintwork, it isn’t guaranteed to cover every scratch. Here’s how we can help you with tougher problems.

You might have to wait between waxing the wax and taking it off, depending on what product.

Pre-Wax Prep

For achieving shine and longevity, it is important to be patient, thorough, meticulous, have patience and have a keen eye. Here are some prep tips for getting the best results from your chosen car wax:

If possible, avoid washing your vehicle in the sun or applying car wax to it.

Wash your car carefully from top to bottom with a soft cloth, soap, and lots of water.

You can clean the paint by using a chemical that will remove road tar, or other stuck-on particles.

You can use one of these clay-bar brands to remove small stains or particles while leaving your paint surface smooth.

If you’re really particular, consider using an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) cleaner to remove any surface fillers or polishing oil. It’s 50 percent alcohol mixed with 50 percent distilled waters.

Apply your wax of choice to the clear coat.

Guide to Car Waxing

Consumer Reports will no longer update the product category, but it will keep it up for archival purposes.

Our latest testing shows that higher-priced car wax brands may be less durable than those of lower price. In fact, certain moderately priced liquids performed better than other products that cost twice as much.

The 19 products that were tested did not score well enough to merit an excellent rating. Some of them showed signs and symptoms of deterioration within just a few weeks.

Our research also revealed that pastes fared no worse than liquids. But, two of the most highly rated pastes were the ones that had the best durability rating. Both wax types had similar scores for ease of use.

Spray-on/wipe off products were not evaluated this time because they have been shown to be less effective at cleaning and ineffective against the weather. We also rated them as having poor durability. They’re best only for newer finishes and if you wash and wax frequently.

Thanks to today’s clear-coat finishes, our testing shows that even the best wax will probably not improve the shine on a new car. It is important to wash your car regularly in order to protect its finish. However, a wax coat can protect your car from bird droppings and tree sap for some time. All products that we evaluated showed significant protection loss within about five to seven weeks. We recommend waxing new cars at least once every three to four months. And if your car is older or the finish has begun to dull, the effects can be even more dramatic. A wax can be applied to fill small scratches or imperfections. Waxes with high gloss ratings removed oxidation, making paint darker and brighter.

Be aware, however that some waxes can cause swirl marks on the paint finish of darker cars. You can check our Ratings to see products that have scored less in this area.

How to choose

All waxes require elbow grease, patience, and time. It will take you at most an hour depending on your speed, how detailed you are and how large your car is. Also, it depends on the type of wax you use. See our Types section and find the product that best fits your needs. We will be referring to these products as “car waxes” throughout this report. In part, this is for clarity, but also, the words “wax” and “polish” are often used interchangeably by makers of the products. Both describe a product that provides a glossy and protective coating, and may or may not remove oxidation and embedded contaminants. Products labeled “cleaner wax” may be somewhat abrasive and can actually remove some paint from the surface of the vehicle.

Look at the Age of Your Car. An easy spray wax is a great option if it’s less than one-two years old but still retains a nice finish. They are best for occasional or weekly use. Spray-waxing can be helpful in enhancing the vehicles’ appearance but it won’t make a significant difference to the cars that are more recent.

You don’t need to replace your car every few years, but waxing helps preserve its finish. If you have an older car, or one whose finish has already begun to oxidize or has embedded grime, you may want to consider a product that scored high for cleaning to help bring back and maintain the finish. Liquid waxes proved the best in cleaning.

Watch Out for Abrasion Waxes can be abrasive, and the tiny particles in car waxes or harsh chemicals can leave fine scratches or a haze on your car’s finish. It is easier to scratch darker-colored cars than light-colored. Products that score low in scratching or hazing testing should not be used if you have a dark-colored car. The same abrasiveness can make clear-coated surfaces look hazy or cloudy when the finish is marred by fine scratches, giving the paint a duller look than before waxing. Clear-coat finish safety is usually indicated on wax packaging.

Take into account how much plastic is on your car. Some waxes may leave visible residues on porous, non-glossy plastic parts like bumpers and trim. Those parts are often black or gray, and some newer cars may have a lot of them. If that sounds like your car, choose a product that scored well in our compatibility-with-plastic tests. If wax has gotten on these surfaces it might be necessary to use a commercially manufactured plastic cleaner.

Types

Match the car wax to your car-care needs. Car waxes come in three forms: liquid, paste, and spray. The majority of car waxes can be used in paste form, which is easier than using liquid waxes. But, liquid waxes have the most cleaning power. While spray waxes leave the least stains on parts plastic, it doesn’t last nearly as long as other waxes.

It is good for polishing, cleaning, and for long-lasting durability. It can be more complicated to spread evenly and then buff them out. The majority of them dry in about 30 seconds. This can change depending on how much sunlight is available and the thickness of your application.

Great for quick application. Overall performance for paste waxes can not match that of liquids. Additionally, you may find it difficult to lift the wax from containers as they get closer to the bottom. After 30 seconds, paste waxes can dry to a white haze.

For new cars with outstanding finishes. They are also great for the convenience of plastic compatibility, ease and spot waxing. You can apply them quickly, and most of them are washable without drying. However, they can be difficult to clean and do not last long.

Waxing Tip

You should first test any wax product before using on your car. You can expect any wax product to last for a few months regardless of what you do, how much money you make or the longevity claims they make. Even the top-quality products that we tested only last a few months.

It’s time to stop using old rags. The simplest way to wax your vehicle is with the right rags. Research has revealed that micro-fiber cloths can remove more residue from terry cloth than terry cloth. This is true whether they are sold at large box chains or auto parts stores. They can often be purchased in small packs, usually five or ten of each rag. For a reasonable price, however they may well be worthwhile.

Washing and Waxing Your Car * Before waxing, thoroughly wash and dry the car using a cleaning solution designed for automotive finishes.

It is important to not wash or wax your car under direct sun or when it feels hot. It can make the paint more fragile to scratching and soften it.

* A lamb’swool mitt is used for washing. Applicator pads and micro-fiber towels are used for waxing. Washing with rags can scratch your finish and trap dirt.

* The car’s exterior can be scratched by synthetic fabrics or brushes.

You can wash and wax small areas. This allows you to save time. However, wax that has remained on the skin for too long can cause it to be more difficult to get off.
