While gorgeous to look at, gaming in 4K with modern games requires loads of graphics horsepower to get above 60 frames per second (fps), today’s generally acknowledged minimum for serious gamers. Only a small number of GPUs are capable enough to reliably drive a 4K monitor with AAA-level games on high settings. To make 4K worth your investment, you would want to turn everything on. You can’t reduce the details in games to run faster in 4K. Nvidia GeForce GTX 3080, GeForceRTX3090, GeForceRTX2080 and AMD Radeon RX6800 are some of these top cards. Prices have skyrocketed in 2021 for all three. If you don’t have one, gaming at 4K is going to demand compromises and it may not be worth the splurge. You have the option to lower the resolution if the 4K resolution is needed for something other than gaming. You can also get a 4KTV for entertainment purposes only, and it will probably be less expensive than a 4KTV. There are many options for 4K TVs that don’t adhere to the same standard as 4K, including a need for high refresh rates (for games models), high-level color accuracy (for content-creators), and low input lag. You can see our top picks for best 4K TVs. If any of these options suits you, however, it’s time to find out if a four-k monitor would be a good fit for you.

Which type of 4K monitor should you buy?

Before you buy a new 4K monitor, you should know the benefits and drawbacks of the different display technologies that power them. It’s usually simple to see the manufacturer’s specification sheet and determine what panel your 4K monitor has. Let’s take a look at the most frequently used.

VERTICAL ALGNMENT (VA). VA panels are some of the oldest in the game. These panels are still available despite the advancements in display technology. VA panels boast the highest contrast ratios other than OLED panels, and offer superior viewing angles and color reproduction to TN panel. These panels are slowest and have the highest input-lag times. These are subpar for gaming.

TWISTED NEMATIC. TN displays, on the other hand, are extremely fast in terms of pixel response, averaging anywhere between 1-millisecond (ms) and 5ms response times, and they are relatively inexpensive to produce versus other panel types, making them ideal for gamers. The drawbacks are: Low contrast ratios, uneven color production and limited viewing angles. This is a lot to sacrifice in the name speed. You’ll see 4KTN displays in models that are more gamer-centric.

IN-PLANE SWITCHING. Common in 4K displays is the use of IPS panels. Although they are more costly than VA and TN panels to make, they provide the most “all-around experience” for users. They offer strong color reproduction, moderately fast response times, wide viewing angles, and excellent color reproduction. IPS models, however, can be more expensive than non-IPS ones depending on screen size.

ORGANIC LUMINOUS-EMITTING DIIODE OLED is the newest display technology in stand-alone monitors. Offering a theoretically infinite contrast ratio, gorgeous color for film and TV, and superb black levels for gaming in dark scenarios, OLED sounds like a great display technology that every monitor manufacturer should be pumping out in droves, and in the OLED TV samples we’ve seen, it looks stupendous.

But 4K OLED displays have been a rage over the years (and have started to be made into laptop screens), and we haven’t seen any OLED-based desktop computers except for the Asus ProArt QC22UC a 21.6′′ 4K panel, which retails at $3,999, as well the Alienware OLED 55. Due to problems with brightness and burn-in, the monitor was not rated as an OLED television that runs at 120Hz.

MINI LED. Finally, there’s mini LED. A mini LED, which embeds thousands or hundreds of small LEDs in the panel, allows you to lighten an LCD panel without having to place a band of LEDs on the edge. A lighting technique called “full-array, local dimming” or FALD can work. This is, for the moment, the best way to get OLED’s endless contrast without spending large amounts of money.

Gaming Elite: Do You Want to Play in 4K?

4K display is not yet a common feature in the gaming-monitor marketplace, but the most popular models adopt rapid pixel-response speeds and extraordinarily fast refresh rates. What features are important for potential 4K gamers? Let’s take a look.

INPUTS LAGGAGE. In general, input lag can be described as how long it takes your monitor to display external actions. For example, if I click a button on my mouse, the input-lag number (measured in milliseconds) expresses how long it took for the click to appear as an onscreen action. While some monitors that are top-of-the-line can produce input-lag values below 2 ms (though this may be slower on 4K displays), it’s possible to get lower numbers with better gaming monitors.

REFRESH RATE. These refresh rates have been a major driver of the recent improvements in monitor resolutions lower than 4K. Monitors with lower resolutions are pushing fast from 60Hz (the industry standard for everyday display) to 144Hz and 144Hz to 160Hz and up to 240Hz in some esports-focused models.

As with everything, 4K makes it more difficult. The early 4K monitors only supported 60Hz due to bandwidth limitations. Many models released over the years have pushed that ceiling up to 144Hz. These include, at this writing, Acer’s Predator X27 Nitro XV273K Predator XB3.

Also in that illustrious company are the HP Omen X65 Emperium (the first Nvidia “Big Format Gaming Display,” or BFGD), and the Asus PG27UQ. What is the secret to their success? The technique is called “chromasubsampling.” You can read about it in our break down of the problems and pitfalls of gaming at 144Hz and 4K.

RESPONSE TIME. NOT to be confused for input lag. The response time measures the time required for a color to change from one type of gray or black to another. The response time for 4K panels should not exceed 20ms. Gaming panel shoppers, in particular need to be competitive, are advised to strive for at least 5ms.

ADAPTIVE-SYNC TECH. Nvidia G-Sync, AMD FreeSync, and AMD FreeSync2 are all flavors of what are known as “adaptive sync” technologies. They are all designed to prevent screen tears (screen draws that leave some areas of the image out of alignment) and stuttering. These ailments can develop on screen monitors designed for gaming or other scenes that feature fast-moving action.

Gigabyte M32U Gaming Monitor is Best

Gigabyte Gigabyte m32U Office Gaming Multimedia Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming Gaming The Gigabyte m32U 4k monitor is one of our favorites. X or Sony PS5 gamers. One of the best monitors available with HDMI 2.1 support, it can benefit from 4k @120Hz gaming using the most recent consoles. The monitor also has FreeSync variable refresh rates, which is great for Xbox and PC gamers. However, we are not yet able to confirm if this will work with the PS5’s variable refresh rate feature.

This device has an outstanding input lag when it is at its maximum refresh rate. However, the same should happen when you are gaming at 120Hz on a console. A remarkable response speed means clear motion and almost no blurry behind fast-moving objects. This screen is large and high resolution, resulting in a truly immersive gaming experience. It also has wide viewing angles, great for co-op gaming.

HDR is supported, but it’s not a great feature. The device has terrible local dimming and low contrast. Also, there is a very poor black uniformity. The peak brightness of HDR is okay, which means that some highlights can look better than SDR. However, it is not bright enough to provide a cinematic HDR experience. It’s a well-rounded, impressive monitor that will please most people.

Best 4K Gaming Monitor: Gigabyte Aorus V43U

Gigabyte Gigabyte Gigabyte MV43U HDR Multimedia Gaming HDR GamingMax Refresh Rate Variable, Refresh Speed FreeSyncThe Gigabyte Gigabyte Gigabyte AV43U HDR-gaming monitor is by far the most impressive 4k display we have tested. This 4k monitor has a huge 43-inch, 4k VA panel. The HDR gaming experience is excellent, featuring great contrast and black uniformity. These are two important elements of an HDR experience. It also has great peak brightness in HDR, so small highlights in games and movies stand out well, and it has an impressive HDR color gamut. This monitor is one of few that offers a cinematic HDR experience.

Sadly, it’s not perfect, as the image degrades at an angle, so it’s not the best for co-op gamers. Some console gamers might be disappointed by the slow 60Hz response. These limitations aside, this monitor is still excellent and we think it’s one of the best HDR gaming monitors that we have ever tested.

Dell S3221Qs Best 32 Inch 4K Display Monitor

Dell S3221QS Office Gaming Multimedia HDR Gaming Max Refresh Rate Variable Refresh Rate FreeSync The best 4k monitor with a 32 inch screen we’ve tested is the Dell S3221QS. A curved VA monitor, it can display dark blacks. This makes it a popular choice for gamers, those working in low light environments, and others who want to see content. While it is able to handle reflections very well, the monitor can still be difficult to read in bright sunlight. Unfortunately, unlike most VA panels it has poor views so sharing your content is difficult.

Even though the 32-inch size is small, it has a very high pixel density, which gives exceptional text clarity. This device has the full sRGB coverage with decent calibration, as well as HDR support. Although it is intended for productivity purposes, the 60Hz refresh rates and slow response times are not ideal. But, VRR allows you to decrease screen tearing. As for the overall HDR experience, it’s just okay because it doesn’t get bright enough to make highlights pop, and it lacks local dimming.

Many additional features are available, including built-in speaker, picture-in–picture mode and a USB hub. The USB hub contains two USB-B upstream ports, along with two USB 3.0 port. For an easier setup, you can simply plug in your peripherals directly to the monitor. Unfortunately, the ergonomics are bad because you can only adjust the height and tilt. Overall, this is a good monitor for everyday use and should please most people. You may prefer a more gaming-oriented 32-inch monitor with a fast refresh rate to the Gigabyte Gigabyte FI32U. But it is not easy to find.

Although the monitor has some connectivity issues, it isn’t perfect. There are two HDMI ports and a single DisplayPort input, but no USB ports. You won’t find it as great for gaming as the 60Hz refresh rate is limited and the slower response time of the pixels makes this monitor less suitable. Overall, though, this is a great monitor for almost any usage, and it’s the best budget 4k monitor we’ve tested as well.
